SHOW ME.

  •  SHOW ME- Explain how you would check that the power-assisted steering is working before starting a journey. ANSWER- There are two ways to test the power steering. Firstly start the engine and turn the steering wheel slightly; a small but noticeable movement should be felt. The second way is to turn the steering wheel just after moving off; the steering should feel light and responsive NOT heavy.

  • SHOW ME- How you would check that the brake lights are working on this car (I can assist you). If you need to switch on the ignition do so but do not start the engine. ANSWER- Switch on the ignition and press the brake pedal. Ask the examiner to check behind the car or use reflections from windows/garage doors.

  • SHOW ME- How you would check the direction indicators are working. ANSWER- Turn on the ignition. Switch on  the left then right indicators. A warning light flashes on the dash and there should be a ticking sound.

  • SHOW ME- How you would check that the horn is working(off road only). ANSWER- Switch on the ignition. Press the horn you should be able to hear it.

  • SHOW ME- How you would check the parking brake(handbrake) for excessive wear; make sure you keep safe control over the vehicle. ANSWER- Press the foot brake on firmly. Demonstrate by applying the parking brake so that when it's fully applied it secures itself, and is not at the end of the working travel and have no play. It should hold the car secure.

  • SHOW ME- How you would clean the windscreen using the washer and wipers. ANSWER- Switch on the ignition and operate the control to wash and wipe.

  • SHOW ME- How you would set the demister controls to clear the windows effectively; this should include both front and rear screens. ANSWER- Check all the relevant controls including fan, temperature,air direction and rear demister button.

  • SHOW ME- How you would switch on the rear fog light(s) and explain when you would use it/them(There's no need to start the engine or exit the vehicle). ANSWER- .Switch on the ignition. Turn on the dipped headlights an then rear fog light(s).Explain that they should only be used when visibility is reduced below 100 metres

  • SHOW ME- How you would switch your headlights from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on inside the car. ANSWER- Switch on the ignition. Switch on the headlights and the operate the main beam. Explain the blue warning light on the dashboard.

TELL ME. 

  • Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil levels and TELL ME how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil. ANSWER- Open the bonnet, identify the dipstick. Explain you need to remove, wipe clean with a dry cloth, replace and the remove again and check the levels on the maximum/minimum gauge. Top up if needed.

  • Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level and TELL ME how you would check that the engine has the correct level. ANSWER- Open the bonnet, identify the engine coolant reservoir and explain the level should be between the maximum/minimum marks. Explain top up should be done when the engine is cold to avoid scoulding.

  • Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and TELL ME- how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid. ANSWER- Open the bonnet, identify the brake fluid reservoir and explain the the level needs to be between the maximum/minimum marks. Top up where need or take the car to a qualified machanic.

  • Open the bonnet, identify the windscreen wash reservoir and TELL ME how you would check the windscreen wash levels. ANSWER- Open the bonnet, identify the windscreen wash reservoir explain the it needs to be kept topped up.

  • TELL ME- Where would you find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how should they be checked. ANSWER- The recommended tyre pressures are found in the manufacturer's handbook. Use a reliable pressure gauge. Check the tyres when they are cold, don't forget the spare tyre and to replace the valve caps.

  • TELL ME- How would you check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their condition is safe to use on  the road. ANSWER- Tyre depth should be checked with a tread depth gauge. Tyres should have at least a 1.6mm tread depth across the centre 3/4 breadth of the tyre around the complete circumference. The tyres should also be checked for visual cuts and bulges.

  • TELL ME- How you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey. ANSWER- Press your foot on the brake. The brake pedal should feel firm NOT slack or spongy. They can be checked at a slow speed making sure that the car stops adequately, the car should not pull to one side whilst braking. Any problems get the checked by a qualified mechanic.

  • TELL ME- How would you check that the headlights and taillights are working(No need to exit the vehicle). ANSWER- Turn on the ignition, switch on the headlights. Explain that you would get out of the car to check all lights.(As this is a tell me question there is no need to get out of the car to check).

  • TELL ME- How would make sure your head restraint is correctly adjuted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash. ANSWER- The head restraint should be adjusted so that the rigid part of the restraint is at least as high as the eyes or level with the top of the ears and as close to the back of the head as comfortable( some restraints might not be ajustable).

  • TELL ME- How would you know if there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system. ANSWER- A warning light will appear on the dashboard if there is a fault with the anti-lock braking system. I this happens get the fault checked out by a qualified mechanic.
